“What about April 21?”

Leah Davis / July 22, 2019

Tonight Scarlett picked out a bedtime story and left us speechless. She chose a book given to her before she was born by my dear friend Cady. We haven’t seen it in months as she had outgrown it, and we used to read it to Blake. He thought it was so silly.

She dug through our books, held it up and started mumbling about a date on the cover. She said, “What about April 21?” I stopped in my tracks, looked at the book, and asked her to repeat herself. That was odd. She doesn’t know how to read yet, and I’m pretty sure she can’t discern a date. She pointed to the top portion of the cover and said, “It says April 21.” I said, “Hmmm, I don’t see a date on here” and looked through the book to see if it was anywhere else. It wasn’t. I asked, “What do you know about April 21?” She said, “I don’t know. I learned it in school.” She’s been out of school for the summer, so that made no sense. Even so, they learned about dates in general, but why this one? I said, “Tell me again about April 21.” She pointed to the cover and said “I see it”.

At that point, my eyes had welled up and I asked her for a big hug. April 21 is Blake’s birthday.

Thanks for joining us for storytime, lil bud. We love you and miss you more than words.
