I live in San Diego now, but for many years before that lived in Washington, D.C. One of my friends there is dealing with a serious illness in her family, in addition to juggling a demanding job and a new baby. Dinner is probably the last thing on her mind most nights, so I sent her money to cover the cost of any takeout she wants (plus tip) via Venmo.
